NINE SONS OF THE DRAGON KING

A notable work from the late sixteenth century, the Wuzazu, describes the nine different sons of the dragon, each represented in unique forms used as ornaments based on their characteristics.

These illustrations are loosely inspired by the descriptions found in the texts.

Bi Xi

His hard tortoise shell is able to carry heavy objects. His image is usually carved at the base of heavy stone steles, pillars and gravestones. He is also known to have a fondness for literature.

Fu Xi

Fu Xi is often found in libraries and on book bindings as he has an affinity for the written word.

Yazi

Yazi was the Great Dragons seventh son and the fiercest. Seeing that he had the heart of a warrior, the Great Dragon deemed he should lead armies.

To strike fear in their opponents, Yazi’s image is depicted on sword blazes, sword grips, hilts, and halberds of axes. His image has even been found on ancient Japanese samurai swords.

Pulao

Pulao, a small sized dragon lives by the sea and fears whales most. Whenever he's attacked by a whale, he will roar incessantly. Thus, his image was put on bells and the wooden striker are sometimes made into the shape of a whale.

Suanmi

With a great love of fire and smoke, Suanmi was charged with tending to the Eternal Flame. His duties included explaining its importance to children.

His image can be found on the bases of Buddhist images, as well as Buddhist thrones. His image can also be found on the legs of incense burners and the pots or stands that hold incense for religious ceremonies.

QiuNiu

QiuNiu is known for his enjoyment of music. His image is usually adorned on instruments. Most commonly on two-string, moon-shaped fiddles and other instruments.

Budai, The Laughing Buddha

Budai is the nickname for the historical Chinese figure Qiec. The name "Budai" translates to "cloth sack," referring to the bag he is often shown carrying as he meanders about. Known for his cheerful disposition, humorous nature, and eccentric lifestyle, Budai is frequently depicted with a smile or laughter, earning him the title "Laughing Buddha."

Budai figurines come in various colors, each with its own significance:

Yellow/Gold symbolizes Prosperity.

White represents Innocence.

Red embodies Vitality.

Blue reflects the Boundless and Heavenly aspects of his character.

Green signifies Nature and Balance.

Brown stands for Humility.

Black symbolizes Enlightenment.
